It is estimated that 15000 people in the UK live and work from home on Canal Barges, mostly in London. There are pro’s and con’s to living on a canal barge and there are many reasons why people do. Amongst those reasons are wanting to find a dwelling in the popular London area and actually being able to afford to live there, many find living on a boat is their only option, being both cheaper and meaning the local amenities are accessible.
Apart from wanting to live and find a property in London, other attractions include loving the outdoors and having a desire to live on the open water. If anyone chooses to live on a boat, they would have a desire and passion to do so as it is an alternative way of living. The recent price rises in mooring fees are also causing havoc for some boat dwellers in London who live and work from home on their boats. A recent price rise has meant many of them are seriously worried they cannot afford to keep their homes, whether this price rise gets passed, remains to be seen.
There are some pretty spectacular Canal boats it has to be said, some of them are simply beautiful and once inside, you certainly wouldn’t miss your home comforts and are quite literally enveloped in a cosy, warm and homely environment and they say, home is where the heart is.
Whether you choose to live on a boat or simply purchase one for a business idea is up to you and a personal choice but purchasing a boat to hire for specific events such as Wedding receptions, Wine Bar’s or quirky Café venue’s in London has become very popular. In this incredibly popular and busy region, any business idea that gets it right, could do fantastically well.
The one main and most important thing when purchasing a boat or barge is to make sure you don’t purchase something that in the long run is going to be a financial disaster. The boat or barge must be sound and whilst there will be ongoing costs, if you purchase something that isn’t sound, there will be added costs that sometimes can make the project financially impossible. Its really important to have an expert or at least someone that knows about boats to go with you to make sure you purchase the right one. Also, be fully aware of the costs of running the barge including any hidden permit costs.
In the end, living on a canal barge is a lifestyle choice and whilst the nostalgic view of cosy winter nights snuggled under soft blankets with the fire roaring can and often is a reality, it can also be hard work. Things will go wrong and invariably, there is always something to do or some disaster to avoid or sort out. What it certainly would be described as is an adventure and for many that have been through it, one they certainly don’t regret. The freedom of being able to move around, live and work from home and make your own choices is right up there with the reasons why people make this choice. Also being able to secure living accommodation in London when there are very few other choices means couples and families can secure a home in their desired location.
If you purchase a boat solely for a business opportunity as long as you do your homework, are informed prior to purchase of the pitfalls and choose wisely, there are some great business opportunities to be had. They say everyone should live on a boat at least once n their lives and for many that do, they never really look back.
