We all like to know where our food comes from and the trend of shopping in local stores and farm shops means we know exactly where a particular piece of meat was bred, reared and slaughtered. This is really important to shoppers now as the trend to buy local and support local farmers continues to grow.
There are also many Urban Beekeepers and backyard apiarists in Britain who not only strive to produce beautiful honey but strive to help the failing bee population. Unlike the rest of Europe, Beekeeping is mostly carried out by Amateurs either on roof top terraces or in their gardens. Many of these amateur Bee keepers feel working from home to increase the Bee population and produce beautiful honey is often more important than any day job they may have to do.
The art of keeping Bee’s is increasing as more people spend more time on hobbies and recreational activities in and around the home. Many work from home with an existing business such as a small Garden Centre and add Bee Keeping as an extra income. Many make their own Honey either to resell or use and pass on to family and friends. The trend of making different flavored Honey’s is increasing and is a business opportunity that has great potential and the shift towards natural continues to grow.
Many supply Honey to local Café’s and restaurants but there is more to keeping Bee’s than just the monetary pleasures. The art of Bee keeping has seen a decline in recent years and it isn’t as simple as popping up a few hives and waiting for the honey. There are other things to consider, one of those being the Bee’s environment and health. One of the main reasons Bee’s have declined in Britain is environment and having enough variation of food. Many homes went through a transformation which saw grass ripped up and paving slabs replaced. Many of the plants and flowers Bee’s needed to survive and thrive were removed, resulting in a declined bee population.
Camilla Goddard wanted to do something with meaning, to work within an industry that mattered and Bee Keeping seemed to be the exact right vocation for her. Camilla not only learnt and became an expert on Bee’s but she also visits Universities and Schools and gives talks on the nature of Bee’s. Many also work from home to provide an expert environment for not only the production of honey but also to maintain health and increase the Bee population.
Many of us are ignorant to the fact that Bee’s are beautiful, meaningful creatures that want to do a good job and we can help provide an environment for them to do this, we can also go one step further and help the Bee population and many are doing so with startling results.
