Its ironic that the purpose of the internet and many of the social websites is to bring people together and it has achieved that but in many ways it has also provoked loneliness as more of us seek to use the internet as a replacement for physical connection. There are many entrepreneurs out there that seek to bring new business opportunities forward that tackle the problem of loneliness through creating Apps and websites that bring people together in the physical world but no one business idea has quite got it right yet.
We often mistake loneliness as not physically seeing people or regularly using the internet instead of physical social interactions and this is true. There are many instances of people meeting socially who don’t interact as they would because they are more interested in what is happening on their phone and social media sites. The reality is that loneliness is much more than that, we can be surrounded by people and still be lonely because we can’t relate to those around us either because we have nothing in common or we don’t have a close enough relationship to confide in that person. We are now more aware of loneliness and there are drives within certain industries to come up with a business idea that will be a solution to loneliness but it does involve the internet and there is a lack of suitable ideas that are hitting the spot and tackling loneliness effectively.
There is a wide cross section of people who suffer from loneliness on a daily basis for different reasons. The elderly who are isolated are one group of people, so too are those that work from home in remote locations but the younger generation have a massive loneliness epidemic that continues to grow and this is the most complex section of society in which to tackle. The younger generation are tech savvy, they have constant access to social media and rely on this to run their lives, plan their social events and interact in general. A recent poll in the UK of age group 18-25 showed quite clearly that those that fall into that age group would like to use the internet and social media sites less but feel they can’t because this is the only connection they have and its better to be part of it and feel lonely than not to be.
There are many areas that need attention but nothing is really shining through when it comes to loneliness, we can’t ignore the internet, social interaction and the way we use it but any business ideas that creates something that both tackles loneliness by bringing the right people together in some way, will get it right. In the future many business opportunities will arise to tackle loneliness but how that will manifest itself remains to be seen but we know one thing, the loneliness epidemic is fast increasing and its complexities are proving a big challenge for anyone wanting to tackle them, could you come up with a business idea that tackles one of the Countries biggest epidemics.
