Writing A Children's Book And Working From home.

The real fire is glowing, the Children are at school and you have started your working day, thoughts are hard to come by today as you think of the next avenue for your Children’s book. This all sounds rather idyllic, working from home, having the space to be creative and write but what is the reality of writing Children’s books and how likely are you to succeed in this very competitive market.

The one main attribute all people have that write seriously is a love of writing, it doesn’t mean they won’t struggle or sit for hours not knowing what to write but overall its their passion and they may have written thousands of words and not even had a single Children’s story published.

The first step is to ask yourself seriously if you really enjoy writing, if you are passionate about it and more importantly whilst you are tapping away working from home, if you are prepared for the long haul of rejection and resubmission.  Writing Children’s books is very competitive but certainly not impossible.  The field has also moved on from the old fashioned ways of obtaining an agent before submitting your work. There are now many online publishers that seek work by unpublished authors and list their submission guidelines online. As long as you follow these guidelines, your work will get considered and although you may receive a polite reply slip saying thanks but no thanks, it’s a start.

The second thing to consider is joining other online groups where you can meet others doing the same thing, bounce ideas off each other and learn more about submitting your work. The society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is an excellent resource where you can get lots if information and support. They also hold conferences where you can meet agents and publishers and get to know more about how you can succeed in this field. They are also great for meeting other potential authors who are working from home just like you. The group is also for illustrators for Children’s books which is another field to consider if you are interested in illustration and submitting your work.

There is a lot of information in the website about self publishing and many have gone down this route quite successfully. Many feel they haven’t properly succeeded if they self publish and it is true that you are responsible for finding an illustrator, marketing and selling your works. This field has moved on also however over the last couple of years and many Publishing houses will include marketing, illustrating and selling your work as part of their package.

The one piece of advice however for any budding Children’s author is not to give up, don’t expect to be successful overnight but have faith in yourself. If you stick with it, there is no reason why you can’t be successful.
